With so little snow in southeastern Wisconsin, the Sunday cross-country ski outing for January 29 moves to the northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, at Greenbush.

About 75 minutes drive from Milwaukee, these hilly trails are well-groomed by volunteers. The area received 8 inches of new snow this week. We’ll meet at 12:45 p.m. (ski at 1 p.m.) in the heated lodge in the second (largest) parking lot. Trails are groomed for both skate and classic skiers, and most of the trails are intermediate to expert. There are outhouses. A state park sticker and trail pass are required. Please call Paula Brookmire at (414) 527-0040 Saturday evening or between 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday to confirm the trails are groomed and open for skiing (and let her know you’re coming). If you want to carpool, let Paula know. Directions from W. Capitol Drive and I-45: Take 1-45 north to Kewaskum and continue north 7 miles to HWY 67. Follow 67 for 20 miles, through Dundee and a 90-degree turn, winding along Long Lake, to a five-way intersection with HWYs B and G. Turn east (right) to stay on HWY 67. Go past signs for Parnell Tower, for Kettle Moraine Correctional Institute and for Old Wade House. Look for Green Bush Recreational Area sign and for Kettle Moraine Dr. Go north (left) on KM Drive and follow Green Bush signs. Road winds through the woods. Go to second parking lot on left (west) side of road. This lot has the warming lodge.

Directions from Milwaukee’s East Side: From E. Capitol Drive and I-43, go north on 1-43 to HWY 57 and then north on HWY PP (just before Plymouth). Go west on PP to Hwy 67, then left on HWY 67. Go six miles to Kettle Moraine Dr. and then north (right) on KM Drive. Follow directions above.
