Preventing Lyme Disease

Will you soon be hiking in hot spots for Lyme Disease in Wisconsin? Learn the best ways to prevent this tick-borne disease at the May 9, 2019, meeting of the Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee, starting at 6:00 pm at Wauwatosa Public Library, 76th Street and North Avenue. Ronda Arndorfer, owner of a health and fitness studio in Oconomowoc, has taken her son to five top Lyme Disease centers from California to Boston to Germany.

“I’m a mom on a mission to educate people about this disease that has some really horrible ramifications if not caught early,” she said. These include heart and neurological problems. It took six years to get a diagnosis for her son, and as a result he has serious health issues, she said. She’ll bring a map of Wisconsin’s Lyme Disease hot spots plus handouts on how to prevent the disease. Lyme disease, often carried by the deer tick, is a problem for outdoor enthusiasts during the May through October tick season.

The Nordic Ski Club will hold its business meeting with announcements starting at 6:00 pm, followed by Arndorfer’s talk. From 5:30 to 8 pm, the club will hold a silent auction to wrap up its 2019 fundraising project to support cross-country skiing, teach young people to ski and make snow for them to ski on at Lapham Peak State Park. Auction items range from artwork to Key lime pies, from a cottage rental in Door County to a sailboat ride on Lake Michigan (see auction story).

The meeting is free and open to the public.
