Get ready for the cross-country ski season with "A Ski Odyssey Across Finland." Come for free pizza and a presentation by club member Rich Hansen at the Oct. 18, 2019, meeting of the Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee. We’ll also have the traditional signup for our four bus trips to ski up north. Remember, signing up early will save you $20. So how did Hansen, a retired oncology physician from Wisconsin, decide to attempt a seven-day trek on skis near the Arctic Circle? It helped that he had relatives in Finland.
"With my love of winter and of cross-country skiing, not to mention my attraction to challenging situations, I recruited my Finnish cousin to do it with me," says Hansen. This is not a race, he notes. "In 1984 a small group of intrepid Finnish cross-country skiers decided to ski across Finland from the Russian border to the Swedish border. They chose a path near the Arctic Circle where Finland is at its most narrow width. Their adventure grew into an annual event that has attracted thousands of skiers from around the world. Four different waves of 50 to 100 skiers leave in March each year to attempt the 440 km trek. After months of preparation and training, we joined with skiers from more than 12 countries to take the challenge. We were not disappointed! The days were long and hard, but eventually we worked our way to the Swedish border with the sweet satisfaction of joining thousands of skiers who had gone before us in this classic Finnish ski odyssey." After Hansen's program, there’s time for socializing.
