Waterville to Pine Woods Ice Age Trail Hike

  • Saturday, November 09, 2024
  • 9:45 AM
  • Pine Woods Campground group campsite D parking lot

Let's hike the Waterville segment of the Ice Age Trail to the Pine Woods Campground parking lot. We will meet at the Pine Woods Campground group campsite D parking lot at 9:45 am and carpool all hikers to the parking lot on the road leading to the Wildlife in Need Center. From there we will hike a spur trail a short distance to the Ice Age Trail. We will follow new Ice Age trail along Waterville Road south about 2 miles. From there we will hike a short way along Waterville Road to the start of the Waterville segment west of Waterville Road. That trail consists of a variety of terrain including multiple boardwalks. There is a nice meadow view from an exposed section of Niagara Escarpment dolomite bedrock on the trail where a new sample Welsh wall has been built. From the south end of that trail we will follow new trail along Cty D and Cty C for a ways. Then there will be a 0.7 mi hike along Cty C until the Scuppernong segment trailhead is reached. After one more mile we will arrive back at the Pine Woods Campground group campsite D parking lot. Hikers whose car was left at the Wildlife in Need Center will be shuttled back to their car. Total hiking distance will be 6 miles. We will stop at Mama Di’s Coffee shop in Wales on the way home for lunch.

Directions: From Milwaukee, take I-94 west to Cty C (exit 285) and go south on Cty C to Hwy 18. Turn right on Hwy 18 for a mile and turn left on Cty C and follow it till it turns right, then continue for a mile and turn left on Waterville Road. Drive about a mile until you reach the Pine Woods Campground entrance on your right. Stay straight on the campground road until you reach the group campsite loop. Campsite D will be at the end of that loop.
